Charles Schwab is entering the crypto space
The fund group filed to launch of an index ETF that will provide exposure to companies involved in digital assets as well as business activities related to blockchain technology. The proposed Schwab Crypto Economy ETF plans to invest at least 80% of net assets in stocks included in the Schwab Crypto Economy Index. The proposal does not include a ticker or expense ratio.It is worth noting that the Crypto Economy ETF will not invest directly in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. There are already eight similar products in the U.S., but the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission has yet to greenlight an ETF that tracks the value of physical cryptocurrencies and has rejected a number of proposals in recent months.
The company follows similar proposals from competitors
Schwab's application follows one from BlackRock, the world's largest asset manager, which sought to launch an ETF on blockchain technology in January. Fidelity Investments a week later announced plans to launch ETFs that invest in companies active in the metaverse and cryptocurrencies more broadly.The crypto or blockchain ETFs currently available to U.S. investors are Bitwise, Global X, Siren, Amplify, two from First Trust, VanEck and Capital Link. These funds collectively manage $1.7 billion in assets, and more ETFs are expected to enter the market as the crypto industry grows.
