Canadian regulators issue advert guidance to crypto exchanges
The Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA), an umbrella group for securities regulators in Canada, has published new guidance for a crypto exchange that includes the use of social media and advertising and marketing.The guide will make it easier for exchanges to advertise and market their services in Canada and also use social media to promote their services. The CSA, alongside the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada, said the publication "provides guidance for [crypto trading platforms or CTPs] on how requirements under securities legislation1 and IIROC rules relating to advertising, marketing and the use of social media may apply to them."
The language to be used by exchanges is discussed in-depth in the guidance as the regulators want to avoid a situation where they promote unrealistic goals. The notice said, "We are concerned that some of these strategies may inappropriately encourage investors to engage in excessively risky trading, taking on risks that they would normally avoid. We wish to remind CTPs that registered dealers have an important role as gatekeepers of the integrity of the capital markets. They should not, by act or omission, engage in or facilitate conduct that brings the market into disrepute."
