Fidelity launches metaverse and digital payments-related ETFs
Fidelity Investments, the world's fourth-largest asset management firm, plans to introduce two exchange-traded funds (ETFs) focused on the larger metaverse and digital payment ecosystems.

Fidelity Metaverse ETF (FMET) will typically invest at least 80% of its assets in securities included in the Fidelity Metaverse Index and depositary receipts representing securities included in the index, according to a statement released by Fidelity on Tuesday. The Fidelity Crypto Industry and Digital Payments ETF (DIG) will offer similar exposure to cryptocurrency, blockchain technology, and digital payment processing companies.“We continue to see demand, particularly from young investors, for access to the rapidly growing industries in the digital ecosystem, and these two thematic ETFs offer investors exposure in a familiar investment vehicle,” Greg Friedman, Fidelity’s head of ETF management and strategy, said in the statement.The firm, which manages $4.2 trillion in assets, applied for a metaverse ETF late in January. According to the firm, trading in the funds is expected to begin around April 21. Both will be passively controlled.
Fidelity is unable to list a Bitcoin ETF
In January, the Securities and Exchange Commission of the United States refused to approve a Fidelity spot Bitcoin ETF in the United States. Unlike other Bitcoin ETFs approved by the SEC, which deal in monthly-expiring Bitcoin futures, Fidelity's proposed ETF would have held Bitcoin directly.
As long as a Bitcoin spot ETF is not allowed, the firm looks for other methods to introduce its customers to the crypto market by letting them invest in companies involved in the industry or related sectors.
