Hard to determine Bitcoin and Ethereum intrinsic value says Bank of Canada
The Bank of Canada today issued a warning on cryptocurrencies. According to them, it is difficult to determine their intrinsic value and the evolution of cryptoasset markets is an emerging financial vulnerability.
“These assets are only good for speculation”
The report the bank released can be seen as bearish about cryptocurrencies in their current state. For example, the bank says that it is not certain that Bitcoin or Ethereum have an intrinsic value and that these assets are only good for speculation.The bank sees stablecoins as a potential solution to price volatility which could make them more suitable as a means of payment and store of value. But according to the report, stablecoins still share some of the same risks as other cryptoassets and could end up hurting the bank if they are not pegged to the government-backed Canadian dollar.

Cryptocurrencies are very popular in Canada. The country beat the United States in launching a crypto-backed exchange-traded fund (ETF), and there are now eight ETFs operating in the country, but the Bank of Canada does not see the importance. "Despite their growing popularity, these markets are not of systemic importance in Canada, neither as an asset class, nor as a payment instrument," the report read.The bank believes that the importance of cryptocurrencies can change if a large technology company with a substantial user base decides to issue a cryptocurrency that becomes broadly accepted.
