P2E games to be taken down from game stores, requests Korean authority
Play-to-Earn (P2E) games, which have attracted major attention from gamers and enthusiasts all over the world, need to be removed from iOS and Google Play Stores, as per a report. The report said that the Game Management Committee (GMC) in the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism requested the marketplaces to delist such games.
P2E gaming to be removed?
As per the report, the authorities have requested the prominent marketplaces owned by Apple and Google to shut down any game that requires in-app purchases and allows users to receive in-game rewards. The P2E gaming system represents both of these qualities.In a P2E game, users can buy NFTs and use them in the game in various ways or can buy or sell them in the marketplace which is built inside the game. This gaming system has seen a massive explosion this year with The Sandbox, Gala Games, being on the top of the list.
The report said that the authorities sent an "official letter to game-related self-classifying operators to block the domestic distribution of games that can obtain cash and goods in advance. It shows the will to block the source from the first stage of game distribution, app registration."
"If you look at the Supreme Court precedent, P2E games cannot be graded under the current law because game items with cash properties can be considered as prizes. I thought it was reasonable,” an official from the Game Committee said.
Conflicts
As per the report, the Game Commission has struck heavy blows on more than 15 games in 2021 and as a result, received a fight from the game companies."The Game Commission prohibits the distribution of P2E games in Korea based on the 'prohibition of prizes' of the Game Industry Promotion Act," said the report.The gamers community has also strongly opposed the actions of the Commission and is opting to use VPNs or Virtual Proxy Networks to play the games.
